Joliet Prison

Wang Changtian grew up in a poor village in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. He remembers to this day a middle-aged villager telling him:
"You will do something great in the future, go and become a Chairman Mao."
At 38, Wang already has his own cult following, having founded China's largest private provider of television entertainment programs.
His company, the Beijing-based Enlight Media, churns out 4.5 hours of programs daily. His programs are largely entertainment shows, which are broadcasted to an estimated audience of 400 million through 300 TV stations around the country. The figures translate into a pretty account sheet, with revenue skyrocketing from 2 million yuan (US$5.4 million) in 1999 its first year in business, to 150 million yuan (US$18 million) in 2002. Profit reportedly is high, reaching 45 million yuan (US$5.4 million) out of revenue of 100 million yuan (US$12 million) in 2001. Plans for a listing on the stock market is in progress.
"Two years ago we had nothing. Now we have the most valuable brand in China's television market. We have programs rivaling our counterparts of China Central Television (CCTV) in terms of viewing ratings and influence,"
Wang has since graduated from Shanghai-based Fudan University in 1988, he has been a civil servant, a dealer of imported paints, a journalist for a financial newspaper, and a producer of a news program for Beijing Television. In August 1998, and he opted out of the television due to politics.
This happened to take place the time that the Chinese government initiated a reform to TV circle, encouraging stations to outsource the production of programs to outside producers. After attempt to join Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television went nowhere, in October 1998 Wang and four friends pooled 100,000 yuan (US$12,082) with their eyes on entertainment programs.
Sample programs soon rolled out, but they failed to find a buyer. The struggled continued and in March 1999, all his partners quit. Wang was disheartened but was still determined to succeed. He flew to Hong Kong and to the United States to take a look at entertainment channels and programs there. The trips were fruitful. Wang decided to follow the syndicate model of selling programs to TV stations in exchange for ad time.
On July 1st, 1999, his first program China Entertainment Report, was broadcast on over 20 channels, which in return earned him two minutes of ad time to Wang's company. Wang's sales team then found advertisers to fill in the slot.
"At that time, China's entertainment reports were utterly in the hands of print media. There was no reason that such hot topics couldn't be made into programs and broadcast on television. Later I found out that many of my ideas coincidentally fit into the same category as some overseas models. I came to the conclusion that my ideas ( doing TV entertainment programs) were not innovative but part of a natural development," said Wang.
He claims that the company built its success on a circulatory system consisting of program planning, production, packaging, distribution, ad sales and value-added services. He also pushed for daily programs to be improved. Luo Ting, a researcher with Beijing Communication College, believes that he has an advantage over TV stations whose complicated cadres system makes any program change difficult.
Together with Enlight Media, privately invested TV program makers have mushroomed since 1998. Beijing alone has over 100 such firms. Many have tried to wade into the same business with Enlight Media, but no one so far poses a real threat.
However, he is not free from headaches. Due to lack of resources, which small TV stations are happy to deal with Enlight Media, big stations are capable of copying Enlight Media's programs. In Beijing and Hunan, Enlight Media has seen its programs moved to less popular channels once the stations come up with similar programs.
The resistance of TV stations to undertake reform has taken the life out of many private producers who are unable to cater to both stations and viewers. A humble Wang has of late reiterated the need to "serve stations well". The company has also downplayed its goal from becoming China's Time-Warner to becoming a "comprehensive media and entertainment group", and has successfully branched into the brokering and promotion of performances and the production of TV dramas.
“ You will do something great in the future, go and become a Chairman Mao”
Cesium (All through the Night)
(Tune, Fever)
(1)
Never know how much I need you,
Never know how much I'd dare,
When I mix you up with water,
I get a heat that's hard to bear.
I need my Cesium!
Burnin' brightly,
Cesium to give me light.
Cesium --
In the morning,
Cesium all through the night.
(2)
Sun lights up the daytime.
Moon lights up the night.
Cesium lights up heaven above,
With a brilliant sky-blue light.
I need my Cesium!
Burnin' hotly.
Cesium shinin' so bright.
Cesium --
In the morning,
Cesium to make me feel right.
(Coda)
Everybody,
Needs some Cesium,
Cesium to give 'em that glow.
Cesium --
Add some water,
Get a fire hot as down below!
(3)
Romeo, he had Cesium,
Cool water Juliette.
When they mixed it up together,
Things got as hot as they can get!
They needed Cesium!
Flamin' madly.
Cesium burnin' so blue.
Cesium --
Shared between them.
Cesium to make their love true.
(4)
Come to the end of my story.
Got to the point that I made.
Cesium's the stuff to heat you up,
And you ain't gonna find no shade!
You'll need cesium!
As you sizzle.
Cesium some comfort to earn.
Cesium --
It's almighty.
What a lovely way to burn!

3.triivi
